Ten Reasons to Attend the YMLS

The Younger Member Leadership Symposium is a leadership training seminar designed specifically with Younger Members in mind.  It is a two-day workshop that will be held in Reston, VA from August 5-7, 2016.  Here are the top ten reasons you should attend this year!

1. Professional Development

This is the only ASCE conference that focuses on your professional career rather than running a successful ASCE Chapter.  Don’t get me wrong, learning how to be a better leader in ASCE is important! But that content is provided at the MRLCs and President and Governor’s Forum.  This is the one true professional development workshop that will enhance your career.

2. Network with Other YMs

Younger Members from across the nation attend this event, and what better way to expand your professional network than spending time with those people? The YMLS is structured so you get to know these younger members in business and social settings.

3. An Interactive Format

The entire program is designed to be interactive and fun! We try not to talk “at” you for  two full days.  Each session is designed to engage the audience and really make you think about what you’re learning.

4. PDHs

There is a lot of content we prepare in this two day format! Generally ASCE offers 7-8 Professional Development Hours that you can apply towards your PE license.  If you’ve ever tried to accumulate PDHs very quickly, you know that it can be time intensive and expensive.  But what if I told you it’s free?!

5. It’s Free!

Yes! It’s free for active Younger Members. Our budget varies year to year, but in general we try to offer the workshop at no cost. This year we have funding to give you a $135 stipend to help cover your hotel for your stay.  We will also help match you with a roommate to decrease costs.  So really, I should say, “We pay you to come!”

6. Visit ASCE Headquarters

So…I’ll be honest…ASCE Headquarters isn’t the most glamorous building. It’s an office building in the suburbs of Virginia.  But it’s still fun to visit and see the place where all of the real work happens!  You can see the ASCE President’s office and on a good day, take a photo in their seat.

7. Pre-Conference Activity

In 2016 we are starting the program with a pre-conference activity in Washington, DC.  The plans aren’t solidified, but it will involve tours of the US Capitol and the ASCE offices in DC.  Even if you have been to the area before, it will be a ton of fun!

8. Improve Your Communication Skills

This kind of ties in the Professional Development, but I think it’s important to reiterate that we will work on communication skills. A lot.  Even if you think you are a great communicator, you always improve!  And the things we teach can help you at work and at home.

9. Personal Growth

A lot of the marketing\ for the YMLS focuses on professional development, but the truth is that you will also achieve personal growth from attending this workshop.  You will be asked to develop a personal vision statement and really consider the type of person and engineer you want to be as you move forward in your career.

10. Kyle’s Birthday

It’s going to be Kyle’s birthday the weekend of the YMLS!   No matter what weekend the YMLS occurs, it will still be his birthday.  So come have a beer with us and enjoy singing along to the birthday song!

  1. Wow, I love this article! Can’t wait to the day that I can apply for this Symposium while having the time and resources to attend it (+be a PE so that I can accumulate PDHs) 😛

    1. Thank you! I really hope you’re able to come at some point. This program just got off the ground again and we hope to make it better every year. You don’t have to be a PE to attend, either…just an active Younger Member of ASCE.
